For the average American in the 19th century, prints became an economical way to bring fine art and historical images into the home. Printers like Currier & Ives and their contemporaries created works on a broad range of subjects at reasonable prices available to an eager middle-class market. Today, these prints serve as visual records of significant events, natural history, and trends in public taste from our nation’s history. In the 20th century, artists continued to use the print media to reflect political, economic and social concerns.
